Sony has finally announced that the PlayStation VR will cost $399, and it will be available in October 2016. The company shared the news this afternoon during a short keynote at the 2016 Game Developer Conference in San Francisco, CA.

As ''CHRIS NORDER'' SAID:''PlayStation VR's processing unit doesn't add any power to the PS4''

The system specifications are:
Norden added, "Actually, it's not really accessible to the developer in any way," noting that "the PlayStation 4 is perfectly capable of [running games at] 120 Hz."

Apple rehires prominent security pro as encryption fight boils









Apple Inc, which has resisted pressure from U.S. law enforcement to unlock encrypted iPhones, this month rehired a top expert in practical cryptography to bring more powerful security features to a wide range of consumer products.





Jon Callas, who co-founded several well-respected secure communications companies including PGP Corp, Silent Circle and Blackphone, rejoined Apple in May, an Apple spokesman said.






Callas has worked for Apple twice before, first from 1995 to 1997 and again from 2009 to 2011. During the second period, he oversaw the upgrades to FileVault in OS X Lion, the first full-disk encryption system to cover the computer's entire home directory. It's unclear what Callas will be working on at Apple, but the move underscores Apple's commitment to disk encryption on its devices, a feature that was at the center of the San Bernardino case earlier this year.











Callas' return to Apple shows how encrypted communications are going mainstream. Silent Circle protects phone calls from eavesdroppers and Blackphone sells a mobile phone that is very difficult to hack. Both companies are small but well regarded.









Apple has said it would continue to increase the security of its products. Companies including Facebook Inc's WhatsApp messaging service have also implemented encryption that makes it harder for law enforcement to access digital information.





"It has always been Jon's dream to bring the most secure products possible to a bigger population," said Mike Janke, who co-founded the secure email company Silent Circle with Callas.

YOUNG AT HEART  A clock placed at the Earth’s center would run slower than one on your nightstand. That means Earth’s core is 2.5 years younger than its surface, new calculations suggest.





Our home planet is young at heart. According to new calculations, Earth’s center is more than two years younger than its surface.



In Einstein’s general theory of relativity, massive objects warp the fabric of spacetime, creating a gravitational pull and slowing time nearby. So a clock placed at Earth’s center will tick ever-so-slightly slower than a clock at its surface. Such time shifts are determined by the gravitational potential, a measure of the amount of work it would take to move an object from one place to another. Since climbing up from Earth’s center would be a struggle against gravity, clocks down deep would run slow relative to surface timepieces.



Over the 4.5 billion years of Earth’s history, the gradual shaving off of fractions of a second adds up to a core that’s 2.5 years younger than the planet’s crust, researchers estimate in the May European Journal of Physics. Theoretical physicist Richard Feynman had suggested in the 1960s that the core was younger, but only by a few days.











The new calculation neglects geological processes, which have a larger impact on the planet’s age. For example, Earth’s core probably formed earlier than its crust. Instead, says study author Ulrik Uggerhøj of Aarhus University in Denmark, the calculation serves as an illustration of gravity’s influence on time — very close to home.

US government study links cellphones to cancer in rats









The US National Toxicology Program (NTP) has carried out the results from their multi-year, peer-reviewed study investigating a causal link between cellphones and cancer. The $25 million study is the largest experiment to date looking into this link, and what they found is more than a little disconcerting.







In an underground lab, researchers built 21 radiofrequency chambers in which more than 2,500 starcrossed rats and mice lived for varying periods of time over the course of two years. Wireless technologies under the microscope for the purposes of this study include GSM and CDMA at 900 megahertz and 1900 megahertz. Test subjects were exposed to these forms of radiation for 9 hours per day in alternating 10-minute intervals of exposure and non-exposure. It should be noted that this is a higher degree of exposure than humans experience with their devices on the regular.







The results for the mice study have not yet been released, but a cancer association became clear in male rats. Interestingly, similar results were not found in the female test subjects, but those exposed to cellphone radiation while in utero had lower birth weights. The types of tumors male rats suffered were gliomas (brain tumors) and schwannomas (tumors of the heart). The NTP reports that the correlation, though slight, definitely appears to be causal. Strangely, the male rats who were exposed to radiation actually had a higher survival rate than the control rats that were not exposed.







Given the widespread global usage of mobile communications among users of all ages, even a very small increase in the incidence of disease resulting from exposure to [cellphone radiation] could have broad implications for public health.

Grains of salt all around, though, because animal experiments do not necessarily have a direct correlation with biological effects in the human body. Nevertheless, it will no longer be possible for people to dismissively say that there’s no risk at all. As the project’s former lead Ron Melnick said .
